About

Rain City Recorders is located in beautiful Vancouver, B.C.

The studio is operated by producers Jesse Gander and Matt Roach. Engineering by Mariessa McLeod and Emily Ryan. Mastering by Stuart McKillop

It features a large drum room, 3 isolation booths, a spacious lounge, and well stocked control room centred around a 48 Channel Neve VR Legend console. The studio is outfitted with everything you need to make a record, just supply the talent! An array of amplfiers, keyboards, drums and fx await you.

100s of bands from all over the world have made records here over the last decade. There is simply no project too big or too small for our facility. We also operate as a mix room for projects recorded in smaller studios.

Monitoring is hanlded by Dynaudio Core 59s, balanced by a Trinnov speaker management system for ultimate translatability.

The studio is able to accommodate projects of any size, yet is priced to cater to the local independent music scene. Do not hesitiate to reach out for a custom quote for your next project!

STAFF

Jesse Gander

Jesse started recording bands on his 4-track cassette recorder in 1994. Since then he as recorded over 700 bands from all over the world. He has travelled to make records in Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and all over the U.S.A. and Canada. He is also a keen mixing engineer with regular customers all over the world.

Jesse’s experience makes him comfortable with almost any genre or format. His engineering puts a strong focus on recreating the classic tones of yesteryear, but brought up to date with modern production techniques. He aims to please the artist and strives to make every record its own unique sonic landscape. An absolute Protools wizard from an analog tape background, he is comfortable with any type of location and tries to accommodate any budget.

Jesse has produced records for many international record labels such as; Domino, Anti, Arts and Crafts, Sergeant House, Hassle, Alternative Tentacles, Mint, Network, No Idea, Deranged, Dirt Cult, Artoffact, Seasons Of Mist, Pelagic, etc etc etc…

Jesse was awarded “Engineer of the Year” in the Western Canadian Music Awards in 2017 for his work with The Pack AD. He won a Juno for Anciients “Voice Of The Void” in 2018, and has been “shortlisted” in the Polaris Prize for his work with Japandroids on their now classic album “Celebration Rock”. Jesse produced White Lung’s album “Deep Fantasy” which Rolling Stone Magazine listed as “one of the 40 greatest punk albums of all time”.

Matt Roach

Matt started out making demos for his and his friend's bands between 2000 and 2008. Matt has always had a lifelong passion for music and recording. In 2009 he moved to Vancouver, BC to pursue audio as his profession. Matt began working at Vogville Studios, moving on to The Armoury Studios in 2010 and spent a year doing freelance work in 2011. In 2012 Matt started as Head Engineer at Greenhouse Studios and has continued to make records there to this day.

In 2015 Rain City Recorders moved into Greenhouse Studio A and Matt has partnered up and took on Studio Manager duties in 2017.

Matt has a focus on independent artists and like to be immersed in the creative process from beginning to end. He also has a hand in the post recording process with assistance in sourcing promotional, artwork, duplication and merch services. 

Stuart McKillop

Stuart is our resident mastering engineer, he has worked with countless bands around the globe. Founding Rain City Recorders in the early 00’s he and his colleagues have worked tirelessly to become a staple in the Vancouver independent music scene.

Mariessa McLeod

 

Mariessa started out at The Hive in 2011, assisting with Colin Stewart and Jesse Gander. She's now cranking up the faders at Rain City Recorders and twisting knobs at The Red Gate. With a knack for all things technical Mariessa has you covered; from fixing boxes of broken cables to recording, mixing and even studio builds. Mariessa approaches recording with a collected confidence that years of experience have provided her.

Emily Ryan

Emily’s career in the music industry began in 2017 when she graduated from the Nimbus School of Recording and Media, with a diploma in advanced engineering and production. After graduation she moved to the UK where she shadowed several Producers working out of Strongroom Studios in East London. 

Upon moving back to Vancouver, Emily started as an intern at Rain City Recorders and has since become one of the in-house engineers, as well as a freelance producer, specializing in rock based music.

Additionally, Emily is a booking agent at Live Acts Canada, and offers artist management. 

Braeden Rango

Braeden “Pockets” Rangno works with people who are passionate about the music they are making, whether it's a heartfelt Acoustic album, Soulful R&B, slammin Hip Hop, Desert Rock, or straight up Electronica, he’s the man to see. 

Braeden has had the pleasure of working on albums that have been nominated for BreakOut West Awards (Don Alder and Kimmortal ) and Polaris Music Prize (Kimmortal).  And has had songs placed with companies such as Lululemon (Francis Arevalo).

Since graduating from Nimbus School of Recording And Media in 2011, Braeden has specialized in mixing and the craft of fusing genres in his work.  He now calls Rain City Recorders home with his space, in Studio C, The Vibe Cave.

Studio Rates

 

Custom packages and flat rates are available on a per-engineer basis. We try to ACCOMMODATE any and every budget.

All Prices are in Canadian Dollars and do not include 5% GSt .

Days are typically 10 hours long, 9 hours of setup and recording, 1 hour of striking and cleaning.

Deposit: A non-refundable deposit of 50% is required to confirm dates. This is typically due 2-3 months before the session.

Studio A Rates (including House engineer)

$50/day discount if you are booking a week or more. For pricing for the engineer of your choice contact them directly.
